Lesvos: The Garden of the Aegean
A visit to the stunning island of Lesvos begins at a fishing port where some world's best sardines can be found. Watch as we see a group fish for octopus and pay a visit to a village where time seems to stand still. In Lesvos, we will meet people that make this island such a culturally rich place. From a unique organic winemaker to a village baker who has been serving his neighbors for generations, Lesvos truly is the land of milk and honey.
Lesvos: The Virgin Mary Festival
To celebrate the Virgin Mary Festival is to learn how the Greeks celebrate religion, life and food: on the day which their beloved saint ascended to heaven. Join the pilgrims as they celebrate the Virgin Mary, the icon, the food and the constant flurry of activity that takes over this small mountain village. Also, visit a 250-year old water mill to discover the island's vibrant capital.
Chios: The Weeping Isle
The North Aegean island of Chios is home to one of the most treasured and rare natural products in the world. Widely regarded for its therapeutic properties and as a prized culinary ingredient, the resin of the mastic tree has shaped the island's history, prosperity and architecture. Travel to the south of the island to witness the miracle of the weeping mastic tree, a phenomenon known only to this part of the world.
Athens: Athena
Explore this vibrant city at street level, discovering the real Athens as lived by its locals. Visit the hub of the community the laiki agora, or people's market, then it's onto the famous Central Market with the world-renowned authority on Greek food, Diane Kochilas. Get a taste of more than food, discovering many of Athens' institutions; from its oldest distillery to learning the art of worry beads.
Crete: Milia
Discover first-hand the art of making filo pastry and traditional Cretan daggers on Greece's largest island. Zagoria & Ioannina: "Behind the Mountains"
In the Pindos Mountain Range of Central Greece lies one of the most spectacular regions in the world. While exploring the region, discover a local delicacy growing in the hillside forests and embark on a mushroom hunt! In the nearby city of Ioannina, famous for its silver and brass, we visit two craftsmen who carry on these traditions.
Meteora
The stone forest of Meteora is one of the most awe-inspiring places on Earth. The monasteries perched atop these inaccessible rock peaks are amongst the most religiously significant places in the world, and have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Explore this amazing location and travel to the Holy Monastery of Tatarnis where and meet a Monk who is not only a cook but a published author! Here, our host assists with the preparation of a number of dishes and learns more about Greek Monastic cooking.
Greek Offerings
In celebration of the wonderful culture and cuisine of Greece, host Barry Vera is back in the kitchen creating some Greek classics, while adding his own imaginative twist. He is also joined by traditional Greek cooks, including acclaimed author and chef, Evie Voutsina who specializes in traditional village cooking. Some of Barry's own recipes include the classic grilled octopus, white bean dip and rusks with tomatoes & soft feta.
