School Library Journal March 2010 Review:
Ameriquest Kids: Your Right to Vote. DVD. 22 min. with tchr's. guide. Prod. by Ameriquest Kids. Dist. by Landmark Media. 2009. $69 per school.
Gr 1-5 The Ameriquest Kids, Sam and Charlie, teach viewers about the importance of voting in this engaging 3-D animated program. When they are faced with the same old safety assembly, the pair wonder if there is any way that they can replace it with the cool presentation by skateboarders that is seen in other schools. After Archibald the American eagle and Lady Liberty challenge the boys to prove to another group of students that voting for a choice of field trips really can make a difference, Sam and Charlie learn how important voting is, how Americans vote for their elected officials, and about the power of each vote. The kids decide to organize a school-wide vote and, as a result of their hard work, they get to enjoy the awesome assembly. Viewers will easily relate to these situations, and the animated characters, music, and cool effects help maintain interest. Live operatives report from the field, showcasing voting booths and offering information about the history of voting. The DVD ends with multiple-choice questions. Supplementary teaching material include transparencies, blackline masters, lesson plans, and a tutorial that explains and demonstrates best teaching practices when incorporating the curriculum materials. Viewers are prompted to visit the Ameriquest Web site (ameriquestkids.com), where teachers and kids can find word searches and other PDF files, a link to the White House and other relevant Web sites, songs from the program, and more. This easy-to-understand, fun presentation teaches an important civics lesson. Future episodes will cover disabilities, liberty, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
